In this November 2018 interview James McMahon from The Climate Service speaks to the The Resilience Journal about the importance for leaders and industry to put climate risk on their radar.

The City of London’s Green Finance Initiative, in partnership with PRI and CDP, is delighted to invite you to a unique climate-related event – the UK’s first TCFD Preparers Forum. Bringing businesses and the financial sector together to learn how both preparers implementing TCFD and how data users are integrating this new information into their financial products, services and investments. It has been over a year since the publication of the TCFD recommendations. A notable feature of these recommendations is to ask both corporates and financial institutions (banks, insurance companies, asset owners, asset managers) to prepare and disclose climate-related risks and opportunities. What has been the response from these “preparers” to the recommendations? What are the key takeaways from this and the initial TCFD reporting over the past 12 months? How to tackle and use climate scenarios? What are the key outstanding challenges for the year ahead? Addressing these questions from both a practical and policy perspective will be the main focus of the event. This event is set to bring together senior representatives from industry, BEIS, the Bank of England, UK financial regulators and the TCFD secretariat to provide updates on the TCFD in a UK context and share their experiences. Panel discussions and interactive sessions will focus on: - Insights on from the TCFD secretariat, PRI & CDP on the response so far from financial institutions and corporates - How to get started on TCFD. What investors are looking for from corporates and how they are using this information. - Guidance for developing a multi-year strategy to adopt TCFD - Demonstration of climate scenario tools and developments in data capture - How to set science-based, 2 degree target for your business

As the demand for disclosure of climate related risks and opportunities scales up in the financial sector, firms are responding by implementing reporting frameworks following guidelines like the Recommendations set out by the Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

To improve the quality and transparency of climate information sought by investors, firms are looking for effective methodologies to improve their evaluation of the financial impacts of climate change in the medium/long run. Think-tanks and research centres have already begun elaborating and testing systems to reach these objectives, particularly for what concerns the energy transition risks and the physical risks related to climate change.

Through the participation of high-level international experts, the workshop will present some of the most interesting instruments and methods in this field. The workshop will also present the British approach to implementing the Recommendations of the TCFD within the national disclosure guidelines, with the purpose of representing a valuable lesson for the Italian firms. The final session will discuss the role of the information that results from these tools for firms and investors.

The DERISK-CO PROJECT, developed at FEEM, aims at mapping and evaluating such methodologies, so as to stimulate a scientifically founded debate on the relevance of disclosing climate information, and to give valuable insights for Italian businesses. This workshop is part of a series of events promoted by the Italian Sustainable Investment Forum (ItaSif) within the SRI week.

This paper provides support and guidance to oil and gas companies and their investors on how to put the TCFD framework into practical use for disclosure on methane emissions. EPRI has embarked on this study to develop a public technical resource that can serve as a scientific foundation for informed dialogue and decision-making on company climate policy scenario analysis and emissions goals. A sound scientific understanding is a requisite first step for companies and stakeholders, as well as for developing methodologies and defensible decisions. In this study, EPRI analyzes and characterizes current scientific understanding, identifying technical issues confronting companies and others, and developing observations from the scientific literature relevant to company planning. Based on these observations, insights are derived for company analysis, proposed methodologies are evaluated, and steps for implementation are provided. Most insights are relevant to companies and stakeholders of any kind, but some are more relevant to electric power companies.

The paper reviews scientific scenarios to understand what the temperature goal means for different investment areas and analyses existing tools and activities at the multilateral development banks. Building on those, the research suggests various tools and approaches to align portfolios with the temperature goals, focusing on energy supply and transport investments. It provides recommendations to improve reporting and disclosure of climate-related financial as well as finance-related climate risks.

Moody's Climate Week Briefing will take place in New York on Thursday, September 27, 2018, for the third year. The event is free to attend but registration for this event is required. Hosted by Moody’s Investors Service in partnership with the Climate Bond Initiative (CBI), the Climate Week Briefing 2018 will focus on the risks that the climate change poses on corporations and governments, and the role of the green bond market in promoting a low carbon economy.
