Twenty large investors have been working together with UNEP FI to develop state of the art methodologies to enable them to analyse their portfolios in line with the recommendations of the FSB’s Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The results of our latest pilot – following the release of two reports detailing new methodologies piloted by banks last year – will be launched at Aviva’s headquarters in London on 10 May. Financial institutions and journalists are invited to attend the event to hear the experiences of investors from the pilot project and find out more about the tools that will help investors perform scenario analysis and calculate the risks and opportunities presented by climate change. This pilot has focused on analysing equities, corporate bonds, and real estate portfolios.

This report presents what Carbon Tracker believes companies would be capable of disclosing, if they were to apply their best efforts. A fossil fuel company’s ability to generate future net cash inflows is largely dependent on its ability to continue to find new economically recoverable hydrocarbon resources and develop these into producing assets; a process which requires significant ongoing capital expenditure. Carbon Tracker research has shown that it is future resources and reserves that have not yet been developed into producing assets that are at greatest risk of stranding in a 2°C world. However, current accounting and disclosure practices offer investors little visibility over this. The model disclosure aims to give investors transparency over the long-term climate-related risks that the sector is exposed to by focusing on the exploration activities and the decision-making process employed by management when approving reserves and resources for development.

Following November 2018 boardroom briefings held by Baker McKenzie, Ndevr Environmental and AECOM on the recommendations from the TCFD, the following discussion paper has been provided on how business leaders can meet their legal obligations to assess and disclose the financial risks and opportunities linked to climate change.

By offering how-to guidance, this publication aims to help companies enhance the robustness, consistency, comparability, and utility of TCFD implementation and reporting through SASB and CDSB’s market-tested frameworks, standards and resources. Regardless of whether an organization has a sophisticated approach to managing climate risks and opportunities or is just getting started, it can use this guidance to move forward in supporting improved decision-making, enhanced market resilience, and more sustainable economic growth.

In 2018, the Brazilian Federation of Banks (FEBRABAN) implemented the first phase of an institutional project to support Brazilian banks in the adoption of the recommendations published by the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) of the Financial Stability Board. A Roadmap with two types of actions was developed: (i) collective actions by the banking sector through FEBRABAN; and (ii) individual actions by the banks. In the TCFD recommendations, companies are asked to implement scenario analysis to figure out their climate-related risks and opportunities when they disclose their strategies to investors. However, because there were few examples which explained and disclosed the process of scenario analysis, the Japanese Ministry of Environment (MOEJ) started the support program for companies to analyze their own climate risks and opportunities in line with the TCFD recommendations in August 2018. In the program, MOEJ selected 6 Japanese companies by focusing on the sectors with the highest likelihood of climate-related financial impacts. Based on the knowledge and experience through the program, MOEJ hereby releases the practical guide for scenario analysis in line with TCFD recommendations. This is the first practical guide to show how companies should implement scenario analysis to integrate climate-related risk and opportunities into their own management strategies by utilizing TCFD recommendations. The Sustainable Investment Forum Europe hosted by Climate Action in partnership with UNEP Finance Initiative brings together investment professionals looking to drive the move to a sustainable and low-carbon economy. This event will be held in Paris. Europe is continuing to cement itself as a leading sustainable finance market. Progress to adopt the key proposals of the EU Sustainable Finance Action Plan is rapidly underway and investors are increasingly working to incorporate sustainability into their strategies and portfolios. The TCFD is also pushing climate higher up the finance community agenda. But enormous efforts are still needed in the near-term future to reach the $100 billion/year global climate finance goal and to catalyse the $5-7 trillion required annually to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

To comprehensively assess the climate risk originating from climate change, this study aims at developing a novel climate adaptation algorithm, representing not only on the basis of Climate Change Adaptation Six Steps (CCA6Steps), but also innovations in climate risk template. The climate risk template is proposed as a climate risk analysis tool based on the procedure of CCA6Steps, including the identification of problems and objectives, the analysis of current and future risks, and the assessment of adaptation options, to identify the relationship between the climate risk components, including hazard, exposure, and vulnerability. An application is implemented to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed algorithm in this study. The results show that the problems and objectives which concern the governance level and stakeholders can be clearly identified by the proposed algorithm. The relationship between climate-related hazards, exposure, and vulnerability of the protected target can also be precisely investigated. Furthermore, the climate adaptation strategies able to mitigate the impact of hazards on the protected target are further discussed in this study. In summary, the proposed climate adaptation algorithm is expected to provide a standard operating procedure and be a useful tool to support climate risk assessment.
